French musical songs

Known for their catchy melodies, French musicals have long fascinated the local audience. This weekend, six French musical stars — Mikelangelo Loconte, Laurent Ban, Robert Marien, Angelo Del Vecchio, Gian Marco Schiaretti, and Elhaida Dani — will enthrall the audience with songs from iconic musicals: “Starmania,” “Les Misérables,” “Notre-Dame de Paris,” “Mozart, L’Opera Rock,” “Le Rouge et Le Noir,” “Roméo et Juliette,” “Don Juan,” “Le Roi Soleil” and “Cindy.”

Chen Sa and Warsaw orchestra

Award-winning Chinese pianist Chen Sa will collaborate with the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra to present Chopin’s “Piano Concerto No. 1.” With Jacek Kaspszyk as the conductor, the orchestra will also play Dvořák’s “Symphony No. 9” and Penderecki’s “Adagietto.”

‘Spanish Fantasia’

Chinese classical guitarist Su Meng will collaborate with U.S. guitarist Manuel Barrueco, Brazilian guitarist Sérgio Assad, Spanish guitarist Marco Antonio San Nicolás, Spanish dancers Miguel Angel Serrano and Alba Nicolas, Chinese dancer Wu Qian and Chinese drummer Gao Cheng for a concert incorporated with a stage performance. The musicians will perform pieces by Bach, Debussy, Schumann, Barrios, Albeniz, Bizet, Tan Dun and more.

Concerts, Chinese musical

The Guangming Culture and Art Center is hosting a variety of shows this week. On Tuesday, five wind musicians from the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra will play a quintet concert featuring Mozart’s “The Magic Flute.” On Thursday, British violinist Stephen Bryant, will collaborate with pianist Caroline Jaya-Ratnam to play pieces by Brahms, Korngold, Grieg, Britten and a few easy-listening tunes. On Saturday, young Chinese pianist Rao Hao will perform works by Chopin and Liszt, and the Chinese musical “Sidereus,” which tells the story of the friendship between astronomers Galileo Galilei and Johannes Kepler will be staged. On Sunday, let’s enjoy Chinese and German lieder performed by Shenzhen Opera and Dance Theater singers.

Gezai opera, concert

The Gezai opera “Qiaopi” originally produced in Xiamen, Fujian Province, will be staged tomorrow. It focuses on Chinese who left their country to work across Southeast Asia in the 19th century. Qiaopi is the name given to the letters written home by Chinese emigrants. In 2013, UNESCO included qiaopi in its Memory of the World Register. Gezai opera, with about 100 years of history, is rich in rustic character with lots of singing and little dialogue. On Wednesday, a vocal concert featuring songs from the 1987 TV series “Dream of the Red Chamber” will be staged.

Concert, ballet

Peru-born singer and multi-instrumentalist Alexandro Querevalú known for his unique style of blending traditional Andean music with modern elements will give a show Thursday night. Then on Friday, the Ballet of Rome in Italy will present “Romeo and Juliet” choreographed and directed by Fabrizio Monteverde.
