Free weekend concerts for September

From Baroque music to modern piano four hands pieces, from traditional Chinese tunes to pop songs, this month’s free weekend concerts at the Shenzhen Concert Hall promise diversified music experiences.

On Sept. 9, young pianists Wu Kunlun and Wu Feng will bring a concert of piano four hands, performing Pachelbel’s “Canon,” Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 5,” Liszt’s “Hungarian Rhapsody,” Schubert’s “Fantasia in F Minor,” Rachmaninoff’s “Vocalise” and the familiar Chinese tune “Colorful Clouds Chasing the Moon.”

On Sept. 17, the Beautiful Sunday series will present a crossover concert by zheng (Chinese plucked board zither) players Gao Yang and Lin Zixuan, percussionist Li Zihan, flutist Liu Zhimin, cellist Jin Di, pianist Qian Weixiang together with students from the Shandong University of Arts. The program will include traditional tunes such as “Lofty Mountains and Flowing River” as well as melodies adapted from Cantopop favorites such as “Love of My Life.”

On Sept. 23, pipa (Chinese lute) players Yang Yingying and Liu Le, and pianist Liu Chenchen from the Shenzhen Arts School will perform a concert alongside their students, presenting the best of Western classical and Chinese music. The audience will hear Pachelbel’s “Canon” as well as Chinese pieces such as “Ethnic Yi Dances” and “Dragon Boat Tune.”
