Performances this week: concerts, ballet on ice, puppet shows...

Symphonies, piano, string

On Friday, the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra (SZSO) will play pieces by Lalo, Ravel and Rimsky-Korsakov at a concert. During the weekend, music fans will have a rare chance to enjoy all six of Tchaikovsky’s symphonies presented by the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra from Russia, with Vladimir Fedoseyev and Denis Lotoev wielding the baton. Also on Saturday, Chinese pianist Duan Zhaoxu will give a recital of pieces composed or re-arranged by Liszt. And on Sunday night, four string musicians from the SZSO will play quartet pieces by Mendelssohn and Haydn.

‘Slava’s Snowshow,’ concert

This week, enjoy the Russian performance “Slava’s Snowshow,” which combines elements of clowning, visual art and physical comedy. The show features a series of beautiful and surreal vignettes and sketches that tell a whimsical, dreamlike story. Meanwhile, Tuvan band Huun Huur Tu will stage a concert Saturday, playing traditional instruments and utilizing throat singing, whistling and various vocal techniques to recreate the sounds of nature.

Cello, children’s plays

Hong Kong cellist Trey Lee will perform pieces by Chopin and Chinese composer Wang Liping on Friday. Lee is the first Asian winner of the International Antonio Janigro Cello Competition. Over the weekend, two Chinese children’s plays adapted from “Wizard of Oz” and “Pinocchio” will be staged.

Light puppet shows

Russian Nikolai Zykov Theater’s “Show of Light Puppets and Giant Dinosaur” will be staged at two venues in Shenzhen. It features a stunning variety of innovative electro-luminous puppets which will delight and surprise spectators of any age. Each miniature features an unexpected turn, revealing new possibilities of the contemporary puppetry.

Ballet on ice, piano

The Saint-Petersburg State Ballet on Ice will combine classical dance and figure-skating in “The Sleeping Beauty” and “Swan Lake” this weekend. Meanwhile, on Saturday, young pianist Yang Yike will give a recital of pieces by Scarlatti, Haydn, Stravinsky and Chopin.

This Sunday, the Tianjin Juilliard School violin teacher Zhang Ziti will collaborate with CUHK-Shenzhen’s School of Music piano assistant professor Michael Tsalka to play a night of pieces by Mozart, Bach, Wieniawski and more.
