A leopard cat cub was found Monday in the Tanglang Mountain Country Park during a routine patrol by staffers. The cub was promptly sent to the Shenzhen Wildlife Rescue Center where it will receive care before it becomes fit to return to its natural habitat.

The baby leopard cat was first spotted curled up and alone on a grassy hillside in the park at around 11 a.m. Monday, Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported.

A little after 4 p.m. on the same day, staffers returned to check on it. They found the cub still lying in the same location and that its mother had not made an appearance.

Staffers took the leopard cat cub to the park’s management office, fed it, and contacted the Shenzhen Wildlife Rescue Center for suggestions.

On the same evening, under the advice of experts from the center, park staffers returned the cub to the spot where it was found, hoping that its mother would come to take it. The next morning, however, the cub was still unaccompanied and in the same place; it was subsequently taken to the wildlife rescue center Tuesday.

The leopard cat is classified as a second-class protected animal on the List of Key Protected Wildlife in China. They mainly live in mountainous areas, forests, and suburban shrublands.
