‘Pride and Prejudice’

Take a step back in time as we meet Elizabeth Bennett and her sisters. While their interfering mother engineers various courtships, Elizabeth and Jane must pursue their own quest for true love. The Chapterhouse Theater Company from Britain will present the English-language play “Pride and Prejudice” adapted from Jane Austen’s beloved novel.

Piano recitals

British pianist, composer and writer Stephen Hough will play pieces by Mompou, Scriabin, Debussy, Liszt and himself tomorrow. On Sunday, young Chinese pianist Wang Zijun will play Beethoven’s pieces on a fortepiano.

Fatoumata Diawara

Gurdjieff, Diawara

The Gurdjieff Ensemble, often characterized by its meditative and spiritual qualities, will play a unique blend of Middle Eastern and Armenian folk music Saturday. On the following evening, France-based Malian singer-songwriter Fatoumata Diawara will sing songs that blend Wassoulou traditions of southern Mali with international influences.

Cateen’s piano recital

‘Wild West Cabaret’

The Fifth Wheel from Germany will present “Wild West Cabaret,” a marionette show, at two venues in Shenzhen.Impeccable manipulation of the puppets, unexpected tricks, tough rhythm, thrilling music and actors’ excellent dancing skills all make the show greatly entertaining.

Piano, folk music, a cappella

Several star musicians will grace Shenzhen Concert Hall this week. Russian pianist Alexander Malofeev who won first prize at the Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians at age 13 will give a recital of Handel, Bach, Purcell and Rachmaninoff pieces tomorrow.

On Friday, Chinese singer Chen Xiangshui will sing an evening of Hunan folk songs. And Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra (SZSO) will collaborate with young pianists Yin Zhi, Li Yuemeng and Liu Liu to play pieces by De Falla and Mozart.

Then on Saturday, cellist Olsi Leka and pianist Peter Caelen will play pieces by Schumann, Stravinsky, Tchaikovsky, Dvořák and Franck. On the same night, Chinese guzheng master Wang Zhongshan will join hands with percussionist Zheng Yu, pianist Ji Lu, and bamboo flutist Huang Jiaqing to play an evening of folk music.

And on Sunday, The Swingles, a renowned a cappella vocal group that originated in 1962, will show their unique and innovative sound by blending classical music with jazz and pop elements.

Musical, violin

Performed by the Sichuan Opera and Dance Theater, the Chinese musical “Sanxingdui” is inspired by the ancient Shu Kingdom archaeological site, Sanxingdui, and tells a story about love, faith and inheritance. There will also be a performance by Slovakian violinist Juraj Cizmarovic, who will play pieces by Kreisler, Wieniawski, Smetana, Liszt, Bartok Brahms, Ravel and Prokofiev.
