SZSO, Simply Quartet

The Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra (SZSO) will present Chinese composer Jia Daqun’s “Symphonic Concerto Cycle — Impressions of ‘Liyuan’ the Chinese Opera” on Wednesday. The piece is incorporated with traditional Chinese opera elements. Then on Friday, Simply Quartet from Shanghai will play tunes by Mozart, Schubert and Mendelssohn.

‘Dreamer and the Rainbow Tiger’

“Dreamer and the Rainbow Tiger” is an Australian black light puppet show centering on hope, imagination and friendship during challenging times. After heavy rains a magical rainbow tiger emerges from a rainbow to visit Dreamer. They share adventures.

“Winerreise”

Dance, violin

On Wednesday, locals can enjoy the dance show “Winerreise” (“Winter Journey”) presented by Tanz Harz from Germany. Then on Friday, Spanish violinist Alicja Smietana will collaborate with Russian pianist Evelyne Berezovsky to play pieces by Beethoven, Ravel, Stravinsky and Franck. And on Saturday, teachers from the School of Music of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen will play an evening of string, wind, percussion and piano pieces by Dvořák, Beethoven, Poulenc, Milhaud and Mendelssohn.

Trio, flamenco, vocal

Chinese violinist Chen Xi, pianist Yang Shanshan and cellist Lu Xin will play trio pieces by Piazzolla, Brahms and Halvorsen on Saturday. Shenzhen mezzo-soprano Li Ying will sing an evening of French art songs composed by Poulenc, Debussy, Berlioz, Gounod, Fauré, Ravel and Satie on Sunday. And a flamenco dance troupe from Spain will present Bizet’s “Carmen” over the weekend.

Piano concerts

Veteran pianist Rudolf Buchbinder will collaborate with Staatskapelle Dresden to present Beethoven’s piano concertos Nos. 2-4 at Wednesday’s concert and No. 1 and No. 5 at Thursday’s concert. Then on Friday, Italian pianist Antonio di Cristofano will give a recital featuring pieces by Beethoven, Schumann, Brahms, Chopin, Berg, Scriabin and Rachmaninoff.

Kunqu opera

Shanghai Grand Theater will present the Kunqu opera “Six Chapters of a Floating Life” on Saturday. The opera was adapted from the autobiography of Shen Fu (1763-1825), in which Shen recalls the happiness he experienced with his late wife Yun.
