Reader Perk| Enjoy world documentaries at Golden Kapok Screening

Sixteen world documentaries released this year and last year will be shown at the Ninth Golden Kapok Screening on Dec. 16-21 at two Broadway cinemas in Shenzhen. All the documentaries are in their original languages with Chinese subtitles and only some have English subtitles.

Among them, French documentary “On the Adamant” won the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year; the U.S. and Kenyan documentary “Between the Rains” snatched Best Documentary Feature at the 2023 Tribeca Festival; and the Indian and French documentary “Against the Tide” won a special jury prize for Vérité Filmmaking at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival.

This time, EyeShenzhen and Broadway Cinematheque will invite three readers to watch the Golden Bear-winning documentary "On the Adamant," which is in French and comes with both English and Chinese subtitles. Scroll to the end of this article to learn about how to be a lucky winner!

‘Anxious in Beirut’ (2023)

Plot: In the ever-present desire to capture, record and understand Beirut, Zakaria has been trying to give a coherent story to his city. ‘Against the Tide’ (2023)

Plot: Two fishermen are driven to desperation by a dying sea. Rakesh has kept faith in the traditional fishing methods; Ganesh has instead embraced technology; and their friendship begins to fracture.

‘Fragments From Heaven’ (2022)

Plot: Mohamed, a nomad who lives in the Moroccan desert, decides to go in search of meteorites to change his family’s hard living conditions. Abderrahmane is a scientist who relies on this meteor debris to pursue his research on the origins of the Earth and life. Behind those objects lie the fragments of human complexity.

‘Between the Rains’ (2023)

Plot: For Kolei, a shepherd boy, becoming a warrior not only shapes masculinity and personal identity, but is also the very foundation on which his community and society root their lives.

‘On the Adamant’ (2023)

Plot: “On the Adamant” follows patients and caregivers at a psychiatric center on a unique floating structure located in the middle of the Seine River in central Paris.

Language: French (English subtitles)

‘Much Ado About Dying’ (2022)

Plot: David, an eccentric gay actor, is a Shakespeare-loving drama queen who has grown old on a diet of attention and applause.

Language: English

‘Lynx Man’ (2023)

Plot: “Lynx Man” revolves around a bearded Finnish hermit who oscillates between sweating out his demons in a sauna, and crawling around the forest at night to document the endangered lynx.

Language: Finnish

‘Bitter Sweet Ballad’ (2023)

Plot: At the choir of the Dandelion School, Beijing’s first middle school specifically established for the children of migrant workers, students have been savoring the joys and sorrows of their youth along this journey accompanied by music.

Plot: Giulia Tonelli, principal dancer at the Zurich Opera House, returns from maternity leave. She has to fight to find her place and a new balance, between the competitive and extremely demanding world of an elite ballet company and her family life.

‘Close to Vermeer’ (2023)

Plot: In the year before he retires, Gregor Weber, a globally renowned Vermeer expert and curator at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, works on his big dream: the largest Vermeer exhibition ever. Together with Weber, a number of enthusiasts and experts go in search of what truly makes a Vermeer a Vermeer.

‘Leap of Faith’ (2023)

Plot: Six teenage girls in China learn to ride horses, compete in matches, build friendships, and deal with loss, all seen from a mother’s eyes.

‘Building’ (2022)

Plot: Directed by Ju Anqi, “Building” focuses on the conservation and revitalization of architectural heritage in Chinese metropolitan areas. Ju spent two years in interviewing more than 80 internationally acclaimed architects, experts, scholars, and practitioners to film the documentary.

‘Objectos de Luz’(2022)

Plot: The evocation of the use of light in cinema leads the “Character of the Man of Light” to ponder over it, over its essence and its multiple manifestations in a revisitation of various geographical places and memories.

‘Bringing the Voice’ (2023)

Plot: Klaudia Kemper reconnects with her aphasic and elderly father, a psychoanalyst who stayed in Brazil after she left for Chile when she was young.
