Writer: Cao Zhen  |  Editor: Zhang Chanwen  |  From: Shenzhen Daily  |  Updated: 2024-01-03

The Guan Shanyue Art Museum, dedicated to collecting, displaying and researching artworks by Guangdong master Guan Shanyue (1912-2000), is currently hosting an exhibition of paintings by Guan and Shandong artist Yu Xining (1913-2007).

The two artists in the same era express patriotic feelings and the spirit of the times through their flower-and-bird paintings, and viewers are fortunate to have an opportunity to admire their works at one exhibition. Their similarities and differences in portraying plum blossoms present the richness and diversity of art.

Guan’s flower-and-bird paintings, whether depicting kapoks and banyans in Guangdong, or the Chinese symbols of robust pine, elegant bamboo and ancient cypress, all reflect the master’s rich spiritual world and his affection for the country.

Yu emphasizes the unity of national spirit, artistic spirit and human spirit in his paintings, broadening the humanistic dimension of traditional flower-and-bird paintings. He developed a magnificent and beautiful artistic style in his plum blossom paintings, not only promoting the artistic essence of Chinese paintings but also embodying a strong spirit of the times.
