Guangdong to hold conference on quality growth

The Guangdong Provincial High-quality Development Conference will be held at Shenzhen World Exhibition & Convention Center in Bao'an District tomorrow, the first working day after the Spring Festival holiday.

Aiming at ramping up high-quality economic development, the conference will invite major government officials, business and academic leaders to share their plans for 2024 and to highlight opportunities in Guangdong at its opening session in the morning and parallel panel discussions in the afternoon.

The conference aims to enhance the mutual development of industries and technologies, bolster indigenous science and technology develoment capabilities, speed up the construction of a modern industrial system, and forge new growth momentum.

Renowned as a powerhouse driving China’s economy, Guangdong achieved a GDP of 13.57 trillion yuan (US$1.89 trillion) in 2023. It became the first province in China to surpass the 13 trillion yuan threshold in 2023, maintaining its position as the country's leading GDP contributor for 35 consecutive years.

The added value of manufacturing industry accounted for 32.7% of Guangdong's GDP. The numbers of industrial enterprises above the designated scale and high-tech enterprises have exceeded 70,000 and 73,000, respectively.

At the forums, the speakers will focus on implementing a balanced regional development strategy, speeding up the construction of a modern industrial system, promoting innovation-driven development, enhancing talent cooperation in Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao, and leveraging finance to empower high-quality development of industrial technologies.  

Guangdong is committed to maintaining the real economy as its cornerstone, by enhancing the quality and scale of its eight industrial clusters, each valued at over a trillion yuan, and expediting the development of new industrial clusters at scales of 1 trillion yuan and 500 billion yuan.

In 2023, the output and sales of automobiles in Guangdong ranked first in the country for the seventh consecutive year. For every four new energy vehicles (NEVs) in the country, one was made in Guangdong. 

Guangdong prioritizes innovation within enterprises, industries, and overall development, empowering enterprises to take the lead in major industrial technological advancements. About 90% of scientific research institutions, scientific researchers, R&D funds, and invention patent applications in the province stem from enterprises.
