Festival celebrations in Chaoshan

Spring Festival celebrations in the Chaoshan region are characterized by rich cultural traditions and vibrant festivities. The Chaoshan region, encompassing the cities of Chaozhou, Shantou, Jieyang and Shanwei in Guangdong Province, is known for its unique customs during this important holiday.

During the Spring Festival holiday, local people partake in various activities to celebrate. One of the prominent folk dances in this region is the Yingge dance, which has a history of over 300 years. Performers adorned in colorful costumes hold wooden sticks and dance in organized formations to the rhythm of the music. This dance aims to ward off evil spirits and bring luck and peace.

In addition to Yingge dance, traditional festive performances with deep historical and cultural roots such as dragon and lion dances are also highly favored among local people. These performances involve vibrant and rhythmic movements that captivate audiences and create an energetic atmosphere.

They also worship Mazu, or Matsu, during the holiday. Mazu is a deity believed to protect seafarers and bring blessings. Among the popular attractions associated with Mazu worship is the Fengshan Mazu Temple in the city of Shanwei. This temple, constructed during the late Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and early Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), holds great historical significance for Shanwei Harbor and serves as a reflection of local customs, culture, arts and folk beliefs. In addition to Mazu Temple, there are other scenic and cultural spots worth viewing such as Phoenix Hill, Mazu statue, Mazu Cultural Square, and Mazu Museum.

The celebrations offer a glimpse into the vibrant cultural fabric of the area.
