Kapok flower: a symbol of heroism

The Kapok tree, a deciduous large tree known for its stunning, large red or orange-red flowers, has long been revered as a symbol of heroism and is also fondly referred to as the “hero flower.”

It holds the prestigious title of being the city flower of Guangzhou, Xiamen, and various other cities. These majestic trees are commonly found in the southern provinces of China, as well as in other tropical regions in Asia and northern Australia.

In Shenzhen, the beautiful Kapok flowers bloom early and have been recognized as some of the most striking in the country, even earning coverage on CCTV. These trees are widely planted throughout the city and can be spotted alongside roads, in public squares, and in parks.

Growing to heights of 10 to 20 meters, Kapok trees create a breathtaking spectacle when in full bloom, with a multitude of vibrant flowers creating a striking contrast against the city landscape. When they reach their peak blooming period, the trees shed a large number of Kapok flowers, adorning the streets of Shenzhen with what appears to be a bright red carpet covering the sidewalks.

Beyond their ornamental beauty, Kapok flowers can also be used as food ingredients, and many residents pick up the fallen flowers and preserve them for use as seasonings in soups or tea, believing in the health benefits of the Kapok ingredient in combating hot and humid climates.
