The Guangdong Provincial Development and Reform Commission unveiled the key construction projects for Guangdong in 2024, with the F1 Guangzhou International Circuit project garnering significant attention. This endeavor, with an expected total investment of 20 billion yuan (US$2.76 billion), aims to construct an FIA-certified Grade 1 race track in Guangzhou, alongside essential supporting facilities. Additionally, an international racing sports park will be developed around this track.

Once completed, this project will mark the second F1 racing track in China.

During the 10th parallel session of the China Guangzhou International Investment Conference in Huadu District yesterday, key industrial projects were showcased, revealing the proposed automobile culture theme park for the first time.

The plan highlights that to achieve high-quality development in the automotive industry in Guangzhou, Huadu District will leverage its automotive industry advantages, abundant cultural and tourism resources, and convenient external transportation links to expedite the planning of the Guangzhou automobile culture theme park. This initiative aims to help establish a new international city landmarkin Guangzhou. The construction of the 5,000-acre automobile theme park will include collaborative projects such as automobile brand experience centers, automobile film parks, automobile museums, e-sports venues, car racing facilities, inspection and testing facilities, automobile accommodations, creative designs, and more.

In 2023, Guangzhou’s automobile production continued to lead the nation for five consecutive years, representing one-tenth of the total national output. Huadu District, housing the Baiyun International Airport, stands as the largest automobile industry hub in southern China, offering significant market potential for hosting F1 events with its robust automotive industry foundation.

Formula 1, part of the FIA Formula One World Championship, is one of the world’s premier motorsport events. The Shanghai International Circuit, completed in 2004, is currently the only racetrack in China capable of hosting F1 events and has successfully held 16 F1 races. From April 19 to 21, the F1 Chinese Grand Prix will rev its engines once again at the Shanghai International Circuit.
