Khachaturian Trio

The Khachaturian Trio, featuring Armine Grigoryan (piano), Karen Shahgaldyan (violin), and Karen Kocharyan (cello), will play pieces by Rachmaninoff, Shostakovich, Khachaturian and Babadjanyan. Founded in 1999 as “Arsika,” the trio adopted the name Khachaturian Trio in honor of the renowned Armenian composer Aram Khachaturian in 2008.

‘Don Juan’

The French musical “Don Juan,” directed by Gilles Maheu, will be staged. French composer Felix Gray drew on Mozart’s opera “Don Giovanni” and Tirso de Molina’s “The Trickster of Seville and the Stone Guest” for his adaptation of the classic storyline. Unlike most artistic works about Don Juan, the musical is a more modern interpretation of the character, and presents his story from a more human perspective. Featuring plentiful flamenco dancing performances and songs of various genres, the production has been well received.

‘Shanghai Tango’

Led by the illustrious dancer and choreographer Jin Xing, the Shanghai Jin Xing Dance Theater will stage “Shanghai Tango,” a 10-piece collection that artfully blends Eastern and Western dance forms. Boasting a sensuous dance style marked by grace, subtlety, and visual allure, the production features acclaimed works such as “Half Dream,” which earned Jin the title of best choreographer at the American Dance Festival 1991, and “Black and Red,” honored with the 1998 China Culture Ministry Award for Modern Art.

Violin, chorus

Chinese violinist Lyu Siqing will collaborate with pianist Jin Wenbin to present Debussy’s “Violin Sonata in G Minor, L. 140” and Franck’s “Sonata for Violin and Piano in A Major, FWV 8” on Friday night.

Shanghai Rainbow Chamber Singers.

Chinese composer Jin Chengzhi will lead his Shanghai Rainbow Chamber Singers in two concerts this weekend. Serving as the choir’s artistic director, Jin has composed over 100 pieces for the ensemble, including nine choral suites. These compositions intricately depict both the daily experiences and spiritual realms of contemporary individuals, showcasing a variety of musical styles and themes. Some of his works delve into the fusion of ethnic music with choral melodies, offering solace and healing, while others infuse elements of humor.
