Since the official implementation of policies regarding the northbound travel for Hong Kong and Macao vehicles, residents of Hong Kong and Macao have shown a growing enthusiasm for driving to the mainland for leisure. The traffic volume at the Zhuhai Port of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge for entry and exit has repeatedly hit new highs.

The Traffic Management Bureau of the Guangdong Provincial Public Security Department issued a reminder today, urging all owners and drivers of northbound vehicles from Hong Kong and Macao to strictly abide by relevant laws and regulations and not to leave Guangdong Province.

According to statistics from the checkpoint at the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, from March 28 to April 6, the cumulative number of people and vehicles entering and exiting through the Zhuhai Port of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge exceeded 1 million and 170,000 respectively. Among these, the number of Hong Kong and Macao passengers exceeded 740,000, with nearly 110,000 Hong Kong and Macao vehicles, accounting for approximately 73% and 64% of the total passenger and vehicle flow. The main group of travelers passing through the port consists of Hong Kong and Macao residents on family trips, constituting around 68% of the overall passenger flow at the port, a 25 percentage point increase from the same period last year, setting a new record.

In light of the significant traffic volume, Guangdong traffic police remind Hong Kong and Macao vehicle owners entering Guangdong to study mainland road traffic safety laws and regulations carefully before arrival, and to drive safely and responsibly once inside the province. In case of any road traffic issues, they can dial 110 or 122.

As per the regulations outlined in the “Measures for the management of Hong Kong/Macao motor vehicles entering and exiting the Chinese Mainland through Zhuhai Port of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge,” Hong Kong and Macao motor vehicles temporarily entering the mainland are restricted to travel within the administrative region of Guangdong Province. Any Hong Kong or Macao vehicles found driving beyond the designated area on the Chinese mainland will not have their new applications processed for a year and all their records will be canceled.

Furthermore, during the valid period of temporary entry of motor vehicle license plates, vehicles are not allowed to stay in the Chinese mainland for more than 30 consecutive days per entry and a total of 180 days per year. In cases where temporary entry exceeds the permitted stay limits without valid reasons or if vehicles travel outside the designated area, the qualification for northbound vehicles from Hong Kong/Macao can be revoked, leading to restrictions on future applications. The “northbound Hong Kong/Macao vehicles” system will notify vehicle owners approaching their stay limits via SMS and email, offering a vehicle stay days (on the Chinese mainland) query feature through the “northbound Hong Kong/Macao vehicles” webpage and application to better manage information on vehicle stays.
