Hosted by the Publicity Department of the Shenzhen Municipal Committee of the CPC, the monthly Shenzhen Art Film Screening project offers movie enthusiasts the opportunity to enjoy art films at affordable prices at four cinemas in the city. This month, comedies and family-themed films have been curated for the project, offering an engaging cinematic experience for viewers.

One of the anticipated movie is Hayao Miyazaki’s “Howl’s Moving Castle,” an enchanting animated masterpiece that blends steam punk aesthetics with a magical narrative. The story follows a young woman who is transformed into an old crone and embarks on an adventurous journey into a moving castle, exploring themes of love, identity, and the consequences of war.

Another Japanese animated gem, “Spy x Family Code: White,” follows a skilled spy masquerading as a family man. He deftly maneuvers through complex missions while concealing his true identity from his family and enemies alike.

Two family-centric movies offer emotional resonance. In “Little Harbor,” a touching coming-of-age drama set in Slovakia, two neglected children find solace and a sense of family in a makeshift community along a riverbank. The Chinese film “Gone With the Boat” centers around Jin, an aged mother living alone in a village. She is diagnosed with a brain tumor and her daughter, amid personal struggles in Shanghai, endeavors to find the best treatment for Jin.

“Chasing a Shooting Star” is a road trip comedy created by Shenzhen University students and teachers. Based on Liu Jiewen’s novel, the film recounts the true event of a meteorite’s entry into Earth in Yunnan in 2017. As the meteorite landing sparks a lucrative offer from a collector agency, people from various areas assemble beneath the snow-capped mountain to embark on a quest.

“Moonstruck” (alternatively titled “I Love You to the Moon and Back”) follows a young couple living apart due to work. They embark on a train journey and along the way, they uncover the true essence of love.

Additionally, several notable Chinese films from earlier years, such as “Brotherhood of Blades II: The Infernal Battlefield” (2017), “Sheep Without a Shepherd” (2019), “American Dreams in China” (2013), and “Drug Dealer” (2018), have also been included in this month’s screening lineup.
