The obsidian, a story

Writer: Cooper Liu, G10, RDF International School  |  Editor: Zhang Zeling  |  From:   |  Updated: 2024-06-04

This story begins with a god whose beloved wife died unexpectedly. The god cried for three days and his tears turned into a piece of obsidian. He cursed the man who would own this obsidian.

The obsidian dropped from the sky onto the beach. Honja, a boy whose fell for this gorgeous girl, picked it up.

But the next day, the girl would leave this town with her stepfather.

Soon came the moment of separation, and Honja might never see this girl again. Watching the girl dwindling into a small speck in the distance, Honja wanted so much for her to stay.

He took out the obsidian and threw it into the water.

The sky suddenly started to shine very brightly and everything turned topsy-turvy. He passed out. When he woke up, he found the time had been rewinded 24 hours and it was yesterday.

He rode a bike to the girl’s house. She didn’t want to leave with her stepfather who was an alcoholic and would beat her when he’s drunk. She jumped onto Honja’s bike.

However, when they reached the railway station, the girl’s stepfather was already there. He punched Honja, sending him to the ground and dragged the girl away. Honja threw out the obsidian and thought: “If I can avoid this punch.” The world flashed and vanished again. The time moved back. Honja avoided the punch and got on the train a second before the door closed.

On the train, they looked out through the window and saw a beautiful lake extending endlessly into the horizon. Everything looked so nice but everything seemed different. Feeling a bit uneasy, Honja threw the obsidian into the water and wished that nothing had changed.

The obsidian flew all the way back to where Honja first picked it up. There, a drunkard was setting off fireworks. He picked up the obsidian and put it in the fireworks barrel. The obsidian exploded into pieces with the fireworks. The clock started to reverse, until it stopped at the moment when the boy picked up the obsidian.

But this time, the obsidian was no more.
