Public health is a term that everyone encounters frequently in their lives but may not be entirely familiar with. However, public health significantly influences every aspect of our lives.
Globally, the infant mortality rate has decreased from an estimated rate of 65 deaths per 1,000 live births in 1990 to 29 deaths per 1,000 live births in 2018. Annual infant deaths have declined from 8.7 million in 1990 to 4 million in 2018, as per the statistics from the World Health Organization.
Behind the scenes, public health endeavors play a pivotal role, with missions to protect and improve people’s health, prevent pandemics and serious diseases, promote healthy lifestyles, and provide economic and medical support to areas and countries in need.
While there are numerous health professionals who offer medical support, public health is much more extensive. As I delved further into this subject, I realized that there is much more we can contribute to.
We can share the fundamental knowledge and concepts of public health with our friends and family to raise awareness. Understanding what public health entails and why it is crucial in our lives is vital.
When faced with potential threats to public health, such as hygiene issues, we should be vigilant and proactive.
Once we identify a potential hygiene hazard, we can notify relevant government agencies so that the problems can be taken care of promptly. As high school students, we can also cultivate an interest in medicine and develop a future career in this field.
I have participated in various health-related activities within my school community. This involvement directly enhances my understanding of public health concepts and their practical application in real life.
I’ve also learned that mental health comprises a significant part of public health concerns. Therefore, all of us need to extend our love and care to those in our community.
