SWCAC exhibition sets stage for Sino-French architectural marvels

In a major celebration of the 60th anniversary of Sino-French diplomatic relations, the vibrant exhibition “Exposition d’architecture contemporaine franco-chinoise” is currently on display at the Sea World Culture & Arts Center (SWCAC). This exhibition stands out as a beacon of architectural cooperation between China and France.

Co-organized by the Consulate General of France in Guangzhou, the French Cultural Centre and the SWCAC, it is curated by internationally acclaimed architect and curator Ye Cheng. The exhibition showcases nearly 100 architectural masterpieces by 32 contemporary Chinese and French architects, bringing together established icons and emerging talents in a dialogue that reflects the rich architectural practices of both countries. This visual feast is open to the public until June 30.

This grand exhibition is the first large-scale architectural show to comprehensively showcase the practices of Chinese and French architects since the establishment of diplomatic ties 60 years ago. Sixteen architectural firms from each country, a total of 32 groups, have been invited to exhibit three representative projects per firm. The exhibition includes 20 physical models, 94 information panels, over 600 images, more than 100,000 words and the screening of four documentaries on Chinese and French architectural maestros and their works.

Noteworthy figures participating in the exhibition include Christian de Portzamparc and Wang Shu, both recipients of the prestigious Pritzker Architecture Prize, as well as prominent French academicians Martin Robain, Paul Andreu, Pierre Clément, among others. The exhibition also features distinguished scholars, directors of architectural institutes, magazine editors, and leading experts in architectural education and research.

Ye Cheng has intricately designed a red-blue translucent exhibition hall that blends Chinese and French architectural aesthetics. The exhibition highlights symbolic elements such as arched doorways reminiscent of Chinese gardens and quatrefoil windows reminiscent of French architecture, creating a visual spectacle. The exhibition caters to scholarly interests while offering visitors a fantastic architectural journey experience.
