A magic show inspired by the centuries-old Hehu New Residence in Longgang District clinched the prestigious Golden Chrysanthemum Award in the magic category at the 12th China Acrobatics Golden Chrysanthemum Awards National Magic and Farce Competition.

Creators and performers from 23 magic shows and nine farce shows across the country convened at the Shenzhen Happy Valley theme park from June 18 to 22 for the competition, which showcased the latest accomplishments in national acrobatic creativity.

The Hehu-themed magic performance unfolds a mesmerizing time-traveling narrative. A contemporary youth, while exploring the Hehu New Residence, a Hakka dwelling built in the 18th century, slips into a dream. Transported back to the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), he witnesses the benevolent Luo family, owner of the residence, selflessly offering their wealth for flood relief. Impressed by Luo’s devotion, integrity, and community love, the emperor honors the residence with the title of the scholar-official residence, awarding a commemorative plaque.

The performance seamlessly integrates traditional and cutting-edge magic tricks, intertwining magical feats with theatrical flair and striking stage visuals. It recounts a profound, indigenous historical tale, extolling the diligent spirit of the local people. The show blends history, culture, and contemporary artistic expressions.

Encompassing 25,000 square meters, Hehu New Residence stands as one of China’s most expansive Hakka dwellings, meticulously preserved over the years. The title of the scholar-official residence bestowed upon the Luo family by the Daoguang Emperor still adorns the ancestral hall entrance.

A Hakka-themed museum established within the residential compound in 1997 displays the residence’s heritage and diverse Hakka traditions. In addition, occasional modern art exhibitions, such as the Hehu International Poster Festival held earlier this year, also enrich the cultural tapestry of the estate.
