

Summer movie season heating up

This summer, amid the rising temperatures, the Chinese film market is heating up.
Over 80 domestic and international films have graced or are set to hit the big screen during the high-energy summer movie season (June-August). As presales and preview screenings kick off, intense competition ensues between domestic and international productions.

The current summer movie season presents a diverse array of cinematic offerings. From exceptional domestic productions to major international blockbusters, from uproarious comedies to gripping crime thrillers, and from animated wonders to innovative artistic ventures, a plethora of distinct new films are poised to captivate audiences throughout this vibrant season.

While the majority of new releases during the summer hail from China, several English and Japanese films add to the lineup. These include “Despicable Me 4” (July 12), “Your Name” (July 19), “Twisters” (July 19), “Deadpool & Wolverine” (July 26), “Blue Lock: Episode Nagi” (July 26), and “One Piece Film: Strong World” (Aug. 23).

Foreign films being screened include “Robert Dreams,” “Inside Out 2,” “A Quiet Place: Day One,” “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” “Young Woman and the Sea,” “Bad Boys: Ride or Die,” “Civil War,” and “The Garfield Movie.”
According to Maoyan’s data, China’s box-office revenue from June 1 to 28 reached 2 billion yuan (US$275 million). At 9 a.m. on Saturday, the domestic films “Moments We Shared,” “Be My Friend,” and “Walk the Line” secured the top three spots on the chart.
“Moments We Shared” chronicles the journey of a disillusioned young man returning to his hometown from the city.
The teen comedy “Be My Friend” narrates the tale of a girl whose contentious relationship with her mother takes an unexpected turn when she journeys back in time to her mother’s past. (SD News)
