Yao Feng imparts musical wisdom at GBA Cultural Talks

Vocalist Yao Feng gave a lecture at Mission Hills Dongguan on Saturday to impart his musical wisdom in an exclusive session titled “Yao Feng Songs — Explanation and Singing.”

It was the second session of the GBA Cultural Talks public lecture series, launched by Mission Hills Group, aimed at developing culturally significant intellectual properties.

The composer and vocal educator captivated over 200 audience members. The lecture covered topics ranging from “The Importance of Studying Ethnic Music” to “Creating Melodic Songs,” offering a deep dive into Yao’s illustrious career. With anecdotes and insights shared alongside live renditions, Yao’s resonant voice breathed life into each song, reflecting his diverse influences and cultural explorations.

Yao began his love for music at the age of 9 after acquiring a bamboo flute. His musical journey has been enriched by a tapestry of ethnic inspirations. Drawing from his encounters with diverse musical traditions, Yao emphasized the importance of embracing the beauty of different dialects and rhythms in his creative process. His eclectic repertoire, infused with influences from ethnic minorities such as Tujia and She, as well as Hakka and Cantonese cultures, reflects his dedication to honoring regional diversity.

Attendees marveled at Yao’s timeless vigor as he shared his musical journey, with some fans traveling from Central China’s Hubei Province to bask in his artistry. A fan said, “I still remember how I was moved by the song ‘My Parents at Home’ composed by Yao Feng and performed by his daughter Yao Beina.”

Amid tears shed during poignant renditions of beloved songs, the audience lauded the musician’s unwavering commitment to public welfare and community enrichment.

Yao Feng, a teacher at Wuhan Conservatory of Music, has created some famous songs like “Vicissitudes of the Sea” and “Affection for Homeland,” which were sung by famous singers Liao Changyong and Song Zuying.
