Foreigners intending to work and reside in the People's Republic of China must possess a valid visa, ensuring they adhere to its validity period, number of entries permitted, duration of stay after entry, and any supplementary annotations.
The validity period of a foreigner's visa refers to the duration during which the visa holder is permitted to enter a country. Unless otherwise specified by the issuing authority, visas become effective from the date of issuance and expire at 24:00 Beijing time on the concluding day of the validity period. Visa holders with unused entry attempts can enter the country before the expiration date, including on the final day of validity. The number of entries on a visa indicates how many times the holder can enter the country during the visa's validity period. Visas are deemed invalid once all entry attempts are utilized or if the visa has expired, regardless of remaining unused entry attempts. To travel to China, a new visa application is necessary. Entry to China with an invalid visa will result in denial of entry.
The duration of stay following entry on a visa indicates the length of time a visa holder is allowed to remain after each entry, commencing from the day following their arrival. If an extension of the visa's duration is necessary, individuals must apply to the local public security bureau's exit and entry administration department at or above the county level at least 7 days before the specified visa expiry. Applicants must submit the required materials justifying the need for an extension. Upon review, if grounds for an extension are found to be valid and satisfactory, the extension of the stay duration is granted. If the extension is not approved, the individual must leave by the specified date. The cumulative extended stay period should not surpass the initial duration of stay specified on the visa.
For those entering China with specific visas like D, J1, Q1, S1, X1, or Z (excluding those stating "can stay for 30 days after entry"), obtaining a residence permit within 30 days of entry is mandatory from the public security bureau's exit and entry administration department at or above the county level where they plan to stay.
