A large blue cabinet at the entrance of the elderly service center of the Wenhui Community in Bao’an District is now offering citizens free rentals of assistive devices such as wheelchairs, walkers, and crutches.
According to Bao’an Daily, around 20 of these smart cabinets will be installed at public venues, including communities and schools across Bao’an District.
The cabinet at Wenhui Community provides a total of five items: a one-legged crutch, a four-legged crutch, an armpit crutch, a walker, and a wheelchair.
Citizens can simply scan the QR code displayed on the cabinet to access the devices, which are disinfected after being returned.
These cabinets offer 24-hour service and have been provided by Jiujiu Barrier-free Facilities Company based in the district.
Luo Furong, the company head, who himself has a disability, emphasized that these shared accessibility cabinets are particularly convenient for seniors and individuals experiencing sudden mobility challenges.
Luo also proposed the idea of establishing a platform for the usage, rental, maintenance, and reclamation of accessibility devices. This initiative aims to better serve people with disabilities and seniors, while also minimizing waste and the underutilization of rehabilitation and assistive devices.
