On Friday, a total of 20 families and social science workers toured the Xichong International Dark Sky Community in Dapeng New Area, the first dark sky community in China, to explore the city’s rich natural resources.
This event marked the launch of the 2024 Shenzhen Social Science Popularization Week and was co-organized by the Shenzhen Social Science Association, Shenzhen Library, and Shenzhen Astronomical Observatory (SZAO).
Participants first arrived at the Xichong Dark Sky Astronomical Hall, where they learned about various astronomical instruments and admired night sky photos taken using them. Children also gained insights into sundials and had the opportunity to assemble a sundial model.
Following this, natural educator Liu Meijiao guided participants on a journey to SZAO, where they expanded their knowledge by observing different plants and insects in the mountains.
At SZAO, a staff member introduced visitors to various astronomical phenomena, and children had the chance to observe celestial bodies through a telescope.
In the coming months, Shenzhen Library, Shenzhen Museum, and other venues will host a series of events as part of the social science popularization week.
