In the bustling city, there lies a carefully “pinned” treasure spot — Pingshan. It is not only a sparkling gem on the map of Shenzhen but also a vivid testament to the interplay of modern innovation and diverse cultures. The “PIN Pingshan” series draws inspiration from location pins on maps, focusing the lens on every corner of Pingshan. Through the firsthand exploration of multiple expat vloggers, it captures the unique charm and limitless possibilities of this vibrant land.

Rita Gimenez from Spain has only been residing in Shenzhen for two months, experiencing all things new to her. Knowing that Pingshan District has stunning scenery, she recently embarked on a tour to explore some of its beautiful gems.

Where nature and science meet

On a humid summer afternoon, Gimenez made her way to the Nanbu Water Purification Station located near the Pingshan River in the Yanzi Lake area. This facility includes an underground water purification plant equipped with cutting-edge technologies, and an above-the-ground public space offering a tranquil environment for visitors to appreciate the natural landscape. Environmental education activities are frequently held for communities.

At the elevated leisure space, fondly referred to as the Pingshan Balcony by locals, Gimenez enjoyed panoramic views of the surroundings, mesmerized by the wetlands, the Yanzi Lake International Convention and Exhibition Center, and the upcoming Shenzhen Natural History Museum. She relaxed at the book room on the Pingshan Balcony, allowing the fresh breeze to rejuvenate her spirits.

Gimenez was impressed by the seamless integration of the water purification plant’s operations with recreational spaces, which establishes a harmonious link between the public and the facility’s functions. She said that it’s remarkable how this design enables people to both relish the environment and acknowledge the communal efforts that sustain the water infrastructure.

Dramaville amid nature

In Pingshan, not only does the Nanbu Water Purification Station blend ecology with culture and leisure, encouraging more people to protect green mountains and clean waters, but the newly opened Shenzhen Pingshan Changshou Dramaville also stands as a public cultural space nestled amid nature. Situated amid lush surroundings to the northeast of Maluan Mountain, and with the Chi’ao Reservoir to the east, the dramaville offers a serene setting.

“It’s truly amazing! Pingshan District collaborated with Longma Studio to transform the Hakka village into a beautiful dramaville, enriching the culturally vibrant lives of its residents,” said Gimenez during her visit to the dramaville.

There, she met Shenzhen-based American Don Rechtman, who delivered an impromptu performance at the dramaville’s environmental theater. Rechtman sang a heartfelt song at the outdoor theater devoid of fixed stages or seats, blurring the lines between actors and spectators. Passersby were drawn in from time to time, immersing themselves in his performance amid the village’s historical charm, against the scenic backdrop of Maluan Mountain in the distance.

“Here you can see how it’s connected through the ecology, through the transformation of what was already here with tradition, with the newcomers, and with the future,” said Gimenez enthusiastically.

‘Natural history museum’ without walls

During her visit to Pingshan, Gimenez discovered the district’s commitment to sustainable development, which highlights Pingshan’s dedication to appreciating and preserving nature. “The ecological efforts in Pingshan are very visible, seen in the surroundings of the water purification facility, the wetlands, and the abundant greenery that you can see in the mountains. This district has given me a very relaxing and calming impression,” she said.

At Shenzhen’s first cross-regional urban promotion space — the “Pingshan Station” space — in Gangxia North, Gimenez was drawn to the Walking Pingshan Trail Map, which leads visitors through Pingshan’s network of nature trails, spanning mountains, forests, villages and parks.

The walking trails feature hundreds of spots for observations and learning, offering people chances to learn biodiversity and connect with nature. Along with videos, guides, maps, routes and more services on a WeChat miniprogram within the Walking Pingshan Trail Map system, this initiative integrates nature education into the communities. Pingshan utilizes its extensive resources to foster a harmonious relationship between humans and nature.

“There’s well-preserved natural beauty in Pingshan. People’s efforts in protecting the environment and their awareness of ecology paint a beautiful picture of coexistence between humans and nature,” said Gimenez. “Next time when I visit Pingshan, I would like to explore Shenzhen Natural History Museum and more unique and charming spots in Pingshan,” she said.

Like an ever-opening natural history museum without walls, Pingshan is not only a sanctuary for lush mountains and clear waters teeming with vibrant ecological diversity, but also a haven where natural spaces continuously unfold for everyone’s enjoyment.
