My move to Shenzhen was a carefully considered step, inspired by the city’s reputation as a global innovation hub.
Before arriving here in 2023, I spent several years in Beijing working on cutting-edge projects such as drones and real-time virtual movie production.
Shenzhen felt like the next logical step, especially as I joined an extended reality (XR) company specializing in real-time 3D surveillance systems.
What strikes me most about Shenzhen is its youthful energy compared with Beijing. The southern Chinese city is constantly evolving, buzzing with creativity and innovation. The local people are warm and welcoming, and the scenic coastal views add a unique charm.
Living near Sea World in Nanshan District, I’ve developed a daily rhythm that centers on starting my mornings watching the sunrise by the sea — a peaceful moment before diving into Shenzhen’s fast-paced tech world. Evenings spent by the waterfront provide a calm contrast that helps me recharge.
Learning Chinese proved to be one of the most challenging yet rewarding parts of adapting to life here. Recently, I earned my HSK4 certificate and am working towards HSK5. The joy on people’s faces when I communicate in their language is priceless: it creates bonds that transcend cultural differences.
