A new book examining the international communication strategies of Chinese mega-cities, with a focus on Shenzhen, was launched at an academic seminar organized by the Shenzhen Academy of Social Sciences on Friday afternoon. The event, titled “The Theory and Practice of Urban International Communication,” brought together leading scholars and experts to explore the city’s pivotal role in global communication.

The book, “Exploring the International Communication Capacity-Building of Chinese Mega-Cities: A Focused Analysis on Shenzhen,” is a collaborative effort between the Shenzhen Academy of Social Sciences and the School of Journalism and Communication at Wuhan University. Written by Professor Yao Xi of Wuhan University and Wu Dinghai, head of the Shenzhen Academy of Social Sciences, the book is one of the first systematic studies in China to address the challenges and opportunities of building international communication capacity at the urban level.

Speaking at the launch, Professor Yao explained why Shenzhen was chosen as the central case study. “Shenzhen’s unique position in China’s urban landscape, its rapid economic growth, and the strategic support it receives from local government policies made it an ideal example for the research,” said Yao. According to Yao, these factors have enabled Shenzhen to lead by example in international communication and demonstrate best practices for other mega-cities.

The book offers a detailed examination of the theoretical foundations of urban international communication and Shenzhen’s practical strategies. It explores the city’s cross-cultural development approaches, potential paths for building global communication capabilities, and methodologies for evaluating the effectiveness of its international branding. The authors also analyze the practical and strategic measures that Shenzhen has implemented to enhance its global influence.

Experts at the seminar praised the book’s contributions to the field. Professor Jiang Zhibin of Shanghai International Studies University noted that the book establishes a rigorous and logical framework for evaluating the effectiveness of international communication efforts in mega-cities. “Many cities are trying to enhance their international communication capabilities, but few have developed systematic ways to assess their success. This book offers a significant breakthrough,” Jiang said.

Professor Qin Xuebing from East China Normal University emphasized the book’s ability to balance in-depth individual narratives with a comprehensive theoretical framework. “The authors vividly portray Shenzhen through stories about expatriates, cultural districts, international events, and online travelogues. At the same time, they provide a broader framework that explains how Shenzhen is building a cross-cultural urban identity,” Qin remarked.

Ye Xiaobin, vice general manager of Shenzhen Media Group, highlighted Shenzhen’s inherent strengths as a global communication hub. With residents from diverse backgrounds, the city serves as a melting pot of cultures. “Shenzhen’s inclusivity and multiculturalism are its natural advantages. Its slogan, ‘You’re a Shenzhener as soon as you arrive,’ perfectly captures the city’s open and welcoming spirit,” Ye said.
