The first batch of officially licensed merchandise for the 15th National Games was released for sale Monday, signaling the start of the 300-day countdown to the Games, which will be held in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) later in November.

Xiyangyang (L) and Lerongrong, mascots for the 15th National Games.

Many of the products, including mascot plush toys Xiyangyang (full of joy) and Lerongrong (happy and harmonious), as well as emblem refrigerator magnets, were designed in Shenzhen, according to the Games’ executive committee.

Chaohua Toys (Shenzhen) Co. Ltd., located in Shajing, Bao’an District, is the designer of the Xiyangyang and Lerongrong toys. The mascots were inspired by the Chinese white dolphin, a nationally protected species. The white mascot is named Xiyangyang, while the pink one is Lerongrong. Both symbolize joy, harmony, and unity.

“It took us just one week to complete the design and prototyping of the mascots,” said the head of the company.

To make the mascots not only visually appealing but also interactive, the design team specially designed an airbag structure, adding a fun element. Before Spring Festival, 12,000 of these mascots will be available for sale, priced at 188 yuan (US$25.6) each or 368 yuan per pair.

Shenzhen Yazhisen Metal Products, based in Pingshan District, is responsible for designing and producing commemorative badges and countdown fridge magnets.

The company has designed three refrigerator magnets for the Games — one for the one-year countdown, another for the 300-day countdown, and the third for Spring Festival. Each magnet’s design is centered around Lingnan cultural elements. For instance, the 300-day countdown magnet features the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge as its visual focal point, symbolizing the connectivity and integration of the GBA.

The 15th National Games’ licensed products include over 2,000 items across 20 major categories. More than 100,000 licensed products are expected to be launched before Spring Festival, and sale dates will be released soon, according to Yu Weijian, vice director of the Marketing Department of the Guangdong executive committee of the Games.

The Games will be held from Nov. 9 to 21. It will mark the first time that Hong Kong and Macao will co-host the nation’s largest, highest-level sporting event.
