The research findings of a team led by Prof. He Yulong and Prof. Zhang Changhua, both from the Seventh Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University in Guangming District, were recently listed as one of China’s Top 10 Advancements in Life Sciences by the China Union of Life Sciences.
This recognition underscores the team’s exceptional contributions to unraveling a century-old mystery in tumor sugar metabolism and proposing an innovative solution to combat chemotherapy resistance.
Their research findings were also included on the Top 10 Scientific Breakthroughs of 2024 list by Dingxiang Academic and the Top 10 Medical News Stories from Sun Yat-sen University in 2024 list.
In collaboration with Prof. Yin Dong, from Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital, and Prof. Axel Behrens, from the Institute of Cancer Research in the U.K., the team unraveled the long-standing puzzle of tumor aerobic glycolysis.
Their research paper, “NBS1 lactylation is required for efficient DNA repair and chemotherapy resistance,” was published in the esteemed journal Nature on July 3, 2024.
Meanwhile, a clinical study project was launched during the Ninth Pearl River International Gastrointestinal Cancer Academic Conference in Guangming District in December 2024, marking a crucial step in translating the team’s research breakthroughs into clinical applications and fostering collaboration to combat resistance to gastrointestinal cancer treatment.
