Practical education at SZTU and its benefits

Writer: Georg W. Wimmer  |  Editor: Rao Guoting  |  From: Original  |  Updated: 2025-03-04

I am Georg W. Wimmer, a professor at Shenzhen Technology University (SZTU), and having observed Shenzhen for years, I have a profound understanding of its remarkable growth, which I firmly attribute to the city’s exceptional efficiency.

When I first came to Shenzhen, there were only four Metro lines, and now the network extends right to the university, with even more lines in planning. The pace of life here is incredibly fast, and everything is accomplished quickly and efficiently — this is what defines Shenzhen.

Since joining SZTU’s College of New Materials and New Energies in October in 2023, I have witnessed how the university’s practical educational philosophy empowers students.

During a commencement ceremony in 2024, I shared from my own experience that only when I started working in a company did I truly understand how to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world settings.

SZTU collaborates with major industry leaders like Huawei, Tencent, Baidu, and SF Express to offer specialized courses and internships to eligible students. In my opinion, these opportunities allow students to transition smoothly into the workforce much earlier, which perfectly aligns with the pragmatic spirit of Shenzhen.

People come here from all over China chasing the “Shenzhen efficiency,” trying new approaches, because sticking to the old ways won’t bring significant change.
