Adapted by the Shanghai Bushuqi (Mousetrap) Theater Studio, the detective masterpiece of the same name revolves around a murder aboard the luxury Steam Ship Karnak as it cruises along the Nile River in the early 20th century Egypt.

A diverse group of tourists from different countries and social classes is enjoying their pleasant holidays on the SS Karnak. Among them is Detective Poirot, who is supposed to be relaxing on his vacation. However, as the journey unfolds, a murder and multiple conspiracies start to emerge.

Although this centenary classic of Christie has been adapted into numerous forms over the years, including a movie of the same name, this performance by the Shanghai theater studio marks the first time the masterpiece has been adapted into a stage play in China. The Chinese-language suspenseful play is scripted by Director Lin Yi, who meticulously crafted the adaptation to faithfully recreate the intricate structure and characters in Christie’s original novel.

The Chinese stage version features 18 main characters, including some that were omitted in the 1978 film, making a return to the spotlight. Each character is vividly portrayed, reflecting universal human feelings such as jealousy, hatred and greed. These complex undercurrents of human nature add a layer of empathy for the audience, as the murder story unfolds with thefts, blackmail and conspiracies obscuring the truth.

The stage version of “Death on the Nile” is presented by a glamorous cast of actors of the Shanghai theater clug, representing three generations of talent. Nationally acclaimed actor Lyu Liang will play the iconic role of Detective Hercule Poirot following his earlier portrayal of the character in “Murder on the Orient Express.”

One of the highlights of the adaptation is the stage design. Stage designer Zhou Ling’er skillfully integrated the London Lynette estate with the exotic charm of Egypt, creating a space that is both realistic and dreamlike.

From indoor to outdoor settings, the audience will be treated to a rich visual feast immersing themselves in the holiday experiences of the travelers on board the Karnak, from the Old Cataract Hotel to the luxury cruise ship and the temples they visit.
