New spots in Shenzhen expected to explore in 2025

From new cultural landmarks and tourist attractions to shopping malls and Metro lines, here are the major developments set to complete in Shenzhen in 2025, offering fresh options for residents and tourists alike.


Cultural and tourism spots 

Shenzhen Natural History Museum 

Located in the Yanzi Lake area of Pingshan District, the Shenzhen Natural History Museum covers an area of 42,000 square meters with a total construction area of 105,000 square meters.

Nestled among hills, wetlands, and the Pingshan River, this museum is poised to become the first large-scale, comprehensive natural history museum in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and southern China. Upon its expected completion in late 2025, it will house extensive natural history collections, display specimens, and facilitate research and education.

Shenzhen Science and Technology Museum

Shenzhen’s new Science and Technology Museum, designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, features a futuristic spaceship-like design. It had a test run during the Spring Festival and is slated for official opening this year.

Many interactive exhibits will combine technology and art, allowing visitors to appreciate the beauty of science and the close connection between technology and the world. Once open, it will serve as a top science center focused on popularizing science, fostering exchanges, promoting innovation, and providing leisure opportunities.

K11 ECOAST Art and Cultural District by the Sea

Scheduled to open April 28, K11 ECOAST Art and Cultural District by the Sea has a floor area of 230,000 square meters and is designed to resemble a giant ship docked in the harbor. The complex includes the cultural and retail landmark K11 ECOAST, a multifunctional cultural space known as K11 HACC (Hybrid Art and Cultural Center), K11 ATELIER office space, and a coastal promenade.

This flagship project, developed with international architects like David Chipperfield and Sou Fujimoto, blends culture, nature, and commerce, offering diverse user experiences.

Starting March 23, three ticketed exhibitions will open at the K11 HACC. Visitors can admire Lucy Sparrow’s dazzling felt art, Chinese rock music-themed photographic works by Gao Yuan and Li Xiaoliang, and Lu Yang’s new media art.

Additionally, a Garfield Family Run event will take place March 29 around the K11 complex, featuring adorable Garfield installations and a market for you to explore and enjoy.

Shenzhen Culture Square

Scheduled to open in September, the Shenzhen Culture Square has a floor area of 188,000 square meters and features nine exhibition halls, a multifunctional theater, an artwork storage area, a design and art street block, fashion shops, and more.

Designed by Ma Yansong’s MAD Architects, the square will integrate design and art exhibitions, education, performances, creative industry incubation, and public cultural activities.

Shenzhen Book City Bay Area Store 

Inspired by the concept of double jade plates, the Shenzhen Book City Bay Area Store elegantly integrates its buildings with expansive rooftop gardens, complementing the surrounding green spaces at ground level. Dubbed the “Eye of the Bay Area,” it won the Platinum Award at the MUSE Design Awards last year.

Slated to open in mid-2025, the store covers 66,000 square meters across two above-ground and two underground levels. It will feature reading spaces, art exhibitions, performances, salons, tech events, creative design showcases, and more, seamlessly connecting urban life with nature.

Shenzhen Qianhai Huafa Ice and Snow World

Expected to open in the fourth quarter of the year, Shenzhen Qianhai Huafa Ice and Snow World will cover 430,000 square meters and, once completed, will be the largest indoor snow park in the world. The complex features an 83-meter ski drop with the longest track measuring 450 meters. The center will have the capacity to host international ski events.

The project will also include a hotel, restaurants, shops, and other recreational spaces.

Shopping complexes 

Sam’s Club in Bao’an

Shenzhen’s fifth Sam’s Club will open this year at the Wanfeng Coastal City shopping mall in Bao’an District. Residents of the Shajing area will have access to a wide range of products from around the world at this membership-based supermarket, with options for online shopping and home delivery available.

Holiday Plaza in Luohu

While the entire Holiday Plaza has not officially opened yet, several coffee and tea shops and restaurants on the ground floor are already welcoming customers. The design of the plaza is inspired by nature, presenting a space where humans, architecture, nature, art, and culture coexist harmoniously. Notably, a dedicated cultural and art center designed by Pulitzer Prize-winning architect Tadao Ando is part of the project.

Joy City

The Joy City shopping mall in Bao’an District is set to become a trendy destination that integrates art and social engagement. Featuring a rooftop garden filled with lush plants, visitors can enjoy high-quality cuisines in a picturesque setting. The ground floor will showcase trendy artistic installations, live concerts, and markets, creating a chic hub for urban dwellers to enjoy themselves.

Transport 

New Metro lines

Four new Metro lines in Shenzhen are set to begin operations this year: the westward extension of Line 5, Phase 2 of the Line 6 spur line, Phase 2 of Line 16, and the northern section of Line 13’s Phase 1.

  • · The westward extension of Line 5 includes Hubei (湖贝站), Dongmen (东门站), and Grand Theater (大剧院站) stations.

  • · Phase 2 of Line 6 spur line extends to Biyan (碧眼站), Hongqiao Park (虹桥公园站), and Guangmingcheng (光明城站) stations.

  • · Phase 2 of Line 16 connects Universiade Station (大运站) to Yuanshan Xikeng Station (园山西坑站), with seven stations in between.

  • · The northern section of Line 13’s Phase 1 runs from Hi-tech Central Station (高新中站) to Shangwu Station (上屋站), with eight stations in between.


Chunfeng Tunnel

Spanning 5,078 meters, the Chunfeng Tunnel connects Binhe Boulevard in the west to Yanhe South Road in the east. Upon its completion, it will be the city’s first single-bore tunnel with a double-decked interior, accommodating two regular lanes and a continuous emergency parking lane on each deck. The tunnel will link to Chunfeng Overpass and significantly enhance traffic conditions around Chunfeng Road in southern Luohu District.
