Shenzhen recently unveiled an electric bicycle trade-in subsidy program for 2025, offering up to 500 yuan (US$69) in subsidy to individual consumers looking to upgrade their electric bikes.

According to the Shenzhen Municipal Bureau of Commerce, residents who purchase new electric bicycles priced at 1,500 yuan or above, are eligible for a one-time subsidy of 500 yuan, effective from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 2025. Each individual can claim the subsidy for the purchase of one new electric bicycle in exchange for each old electric bike scrapped, with a limit of one subsidy per person within this year.

To qualify for the subsidy, applicants must trade in their old electric bicycles equipped with vehicle batteries to authorized dismantling dealers in Shenzhen. Obtaining a scrapping certification within the designated timeframe is a crucial step in applying for the subsidy. In addition, the new electric bicyle must be purchased from authorized dealers in Shenzhen, and comply with national product standards, with a product qualification certificate and China Compulsory Certification (CCC) certificate.

The financial incentive for e-bike owners will also contribute to the city’s environmental conservation efforts.

The scrapping certificates and new bicycle sales receipts should be issued between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31 to qualify for a subsidy. New electric bicycles must be registered between Jan. 1, 2025 and Jan. 10, 2026. It is vital that the individual listed on the scrapping certification, the new bicycle owner, and the applicant are the same person.

Residents interested in availing themselves of the subsidy can complete real-name certification, upload mandatory documents and sub applications through the designated subsidy application platform.
