Meet ancient celebrities at this exhibition

A remarkable collection of ancient Chinese paintings is currently on display at the Shenzhen Museum’s History and Folk Culture Division until March 30.

Featuring 131 portraits created during the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties, this exhibition presents members of imperial families, officials, and literati, offering insights into the politics, etiquette, art, folk customs, and attire of their respective eras.

In the full-length portraits of notable figures like Tang Dynasty (618-907) emperor Li Yuan, Song Dynasty (960-1127) emperor Zhao Kuangyin, and Qing emperor Kangxi, viewers can admire their dignified and regal poses adorned in splendid robes. The diverse portrait styles from different epochs provide a window into the evolving artistic trends of each period.

Paintings depicting gatherings of literati and leisure scenes from imperial settings offer a glimpse into the intellectual pursuits, beliefs, and aesthetic preferences of various societal strata.
