Vibrant abstract paintings and pop collages created by Chinese artist Xue Song are now on display at his “Meta-Nature” exhibition at the Shenzhen Museum of Contemporary Art and Urban Planning. The works in bright colors, set against the backdrop of white walls in the spacious halls, create an enthralling experience for visitors.

Curated by Jiang Jun, the exhibition showcases more than 60 pieces created by Xue in the past four decades. The title “Meta-Nature” originates from Xue’s series created in 2019, which conveys a fusion of the physical world, culture, and the digital realm. The series suggests an effort toward harmony with nature while also reflecting the conflict between the natural and the artificial in modern civilization.

Xue’s early works were influenced by expressionism and pop art. In 1990, a fire destroyed his studio along with many of his works. The burnt fragments that survived inspired him to create collages, symbolizing memories, reflection, and the rebirth that comes from deconstruction.

His passion for collecting books, magazines, photos, and paintings also serves as a wellspring of inspiration. These resources are often torn, burned, and combined to assemble intricate works that explore a staggering array of diverse themes. This approach spins from his long-standing fascination with artistic evolution.
