In a revolutionary development for coffee enthusiasts, Starbucks China on Tuesday announced the nationwide launch of its sugar-free innovation across over 7,600 stores.
This innovation promises to redefine the coffee experience by allowing customers unparalleled control over the flavor and sweetness of their beverages, ushering in a new era of sugar-free flavored coffee, the coffeehouse chain said.
According to Starbucks China, it has developed a system that completely separates the flavor and sugar in the original flavored syrups used in Starbucks drinks. This means customers can now enjoy a full, undiluted experience while having the freedom to choose their desired flavor and level of sweetness — or opt for no sugar at all.
With at least 500 different flavor and sweetness combinations available, the possibilities are virtually endless.
Starbucks has also introduced a new zero-calorie sugar substitute, specifically tailored for its coffee offerings. This plant-based sweetener, containing stevioside and mogroside, provides an additional option for those looking to reduce their sugar intake without compromising on taste.
The move comes in response to growing consumer demand for healthier beverage options. A market research study conducted by Starbucks in China, involving over 1,600 respondents, revealed that while 71% of consumers prefer flavored coffee, a significant portion are concerned about the health impacts of sugar.
Specifically, 31% are worried about the health burden caused by sugar, and 40% believe that overly sweet flavored coffee negatively affects the taste.
Tony Yang, chief growth officer of Starbucks China, emphasized the brand’s commitment to meeting diverse customer needs. “We have seen a huge, unmet demand for sugar-free and low-sugar flavored coffee among Chinese customers,” Yang said.
“With our sugar-free innovation, we aim to lead flavored coffee into the sugar-free era, offering customized choices that cater to different flavor and sweetness preferences,” he added.
The initiative is also aligned with the National Health Commission’s three-year campaign on public weight management.
Chen Junshi, a renowned academician and nutrition expert, lauded Starbucks’ efforts, stating, “Beverage sugar reduction is a key focus area, and it’s imperative for leading enterprises to drive technological innovation.”
