Zhao Xiaoyong, a painter renowned for his remarkable replicas of Van Gogh’s works, is currently showcasing his art in Nanshan District.
The exhibition is divided into two parts: “Meeting Van Gogh,” which features Zhao’s copied works of Van Gogh, and “I’m Not Van Gogh,” displaying over 40 of his original artworks that reflect themes of hometown, Shenzhen, family, self-portraits. It also includes paintings created by his family members.
Zhao’s journey is inspiring: he dropped out of school at a young age and worked as a migrant laborer before arriving at Dafen Village in Shenzhen in 1996. This village is famous for producing replicated artworks that are sold internationally. Since then, Zhao has created more than 100,000 copies of Van Gogh’s masterpieces.
His story gained international attention in 2016 with the documentary “China’s Van Gogh,” which highlighted the vibrant art community in Dafen and showcased Zhao’s talent.
