'Red vests' at the crossroads

The bustling Futian Checkpoint in Shenzhen comes alive in the afternoon, with crowds flowing endlessly. Among them, several volunteers in red vests stand out. Whenever they spot a traveler looking around uncertainly, they step forward, offering assistance in Cantonese or Mandarin, with a slight Hong Kong accent.

These volunteers belong to the Hong Kongers Volunteer Team, organized by Shenzhen’s Futian Subdistrict. The team’s primary mission is to escort cross-border students commuting between the two cities and assist the increasing number of Hong Kong travelers with directions, shopping, medical services and logistics.

“The motherland’s development gives us Hong Kong residents a sense of security, and we want to contribute our part to foster cross-border exchange,” says Xu Ya’nyu, the team leader. Since its establishment in July 2024, the team has grown to over 100 members.

On a Friday afternoon, Xu, a resident of Hong Kong’s Northern District, takes a minibus to Heung Yuen Wai Port. After clearing customs, she transfers from Shenzhen Metro Line 2 to Line 4, arriving at Futian Port — a journey of about 80 minutes.

After changing into her red vest, Xu takes her assigned spot along the route used by Hong Kong residents to enter Shenzhen, ready to guide cross-border students returning from Hong Kong.

Her two-hour volunteer shifts always pass quickly. Sometimes, she helps clear a path for students. At other times, she assists travelers in locating lost items, teaches them how to use ride-hailing apps, or explains how to obtain a mainland phone card.

Xu’s volunteer journey began over 20 years ago when her son was in primary school. She started volunteering at schools in Hong Kong’s Northern District, hoping to set an example for him.

Last year, upon learning through a local association that Futian Subdistrict was forming a volunteer team, she immediately signed up. Her extensive volunteer experience in Hong Kong and familiarity with both cultures earned her the role of team leader. Inspired by her dedication, many of her friends joined the team. “They all want to contribute and become bridges between Shenzhen and Hong Kong,” she said.
