A group of senior volunteers donning bright red vests were recently seen guiding electric bike riders to properly park their bikes in Futian’s Huaqiangbei Subdistrict, proving that age is no barrier to community contribution.
The growing use of e-bikes among residents has brought challenges in urban parking management, with many vehicles parked on sidewalks and at entrances creating congestion and safety hazards.

The subdistrict’s Silver-haired Volunteers, consisting primarily of local retirees and senior residents, have been seen patrolling the streets in the subdistrict, guiding e-bikers to properly park their vehicles in designated areas. A senior resident in Fuqiang Community who gave only his family name Zhang said, “We are glad to contribute to society.”

The subdistrict has adopted an innovative “volunteer point system,” to facilitate the sign up for voluntary service among locals via the “Yuezhimei” WeChat mini program. Volunteers earn two points for every hour of service, which can be exchanged for daily essentials like cooking oil and rice. The initiative helps motivate public participation and enhances a shared sense of responsibility for the neighborhood.
