Biomedical dream in SZ: Indonesian student aims high

A dynamic and diverse generation, Generation Z (Gen Z) is stepping into the spotlight, armed with a unique blend of strengths and facing a distinct set of challenges.

Jessica Theodora, an international student at the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), is among the vibrant cohort of Gen Z students embracing challenges, seeking knowledge, and building bridges across cultures in Shenzhen.

Theodora, who hails from Indonesia, said her major in biomedical engineering was the primary factor behind her decision to pursue studies in Shenzhen. The city’s expanding opportunities in health care, coupled with its technological advancements, create a unique environment for her field of study.

“The city is home to a lot of biotech and medical device companies, making it the perfect place for me to witness firsthand the advancements in my field,” she said.

Theodora shared that when she first arrived in Shenzhen, she faced a major culture shock, particularly in her academic studies. The pressure and workload were initially overwhelming. “But over time, I’ve adapted to the system, and I’m now happy to be here. I’ve also made many friends, both Chinese and international.”

She feels that Shenzhen’s abundant educational resources have been instrumental in her academic journey. The educational environment offers a wealth of resources, encompassing both robust theoretical instruction and ample opportunities for practical, hands-on project work.

While the presence of highly intelligent, competitive Chinese students creates a challenging atmosphere, Theodora finds it motivates and pushes her to continuously learn and expand her boundaries.

Despite her academic commitments, Theodora’s social life has flourished as well. During her time in Shenzhen, she has also taken up the guzheng (Chinese zither) and joined the university’s traditional Chinese music club, performing several times with her Chinese friends.

Recently, she joined the newly established global students association at the university, where she connects with students from different countries and cultures.

Theodora is also an active member of the Z10 Club launched by EyeShenzhen, which encourages international Gen Z students to share their “Shenzhen Stories” on social media platforms.

Looking towards the future, Theodora hopes to stay in Shenzhen after graduation, either to further her education or pursue a career related to biotechnology.

As for any advice for international students considering studying in Shenzhen, Theodora suggested that one be prepared mentally and cultivate independence.

“When you first arrive, you will likely be alone, and it takes courage to navigate new surroundings by yourself. Don’t be afraid to ask for directions or help when needed,” she said. “Be independent, be confident, and learning some basic Chinese for survival needs will be beneficial.”
