Chunfeng Tunnel opens to traffic

The Chunfeng Tunnel — connecting Binhe Road in the west to the Xinxiu Overpass over Yanhe Road South in the east — in Luohu District was officially opened to traffic yesterday. It will double capacity on this section of Chunfeng Road and significantly improve traffic flow at the Chunfeng Overpass.

Situated between 20 and 49 meters underground, it is the city's first single-bore tunnel featuring a double-deck interior. Each deck accommodates three lanes — two for regular traffic and one for emergency parking. The speed limit within the tunnel is 60 km/h.

With a height limit of 3.5 meters, the tunnel is only accessible to passenger cars with nine seats or fewer. Trucks, medium-sized and larger buses, non-motorized vehicles, and pedestrians are strictly prohibited from entering.

The 4.6-km tunnel is part of the 5.08-km Chunfeng Tunnel Project, which will eventually connect the tunnel to existing surface roads. The project is a key component of the city’s plan to alleviate traffic congestion caused by mismatched lanes on the existing Chunfeng Overpass.

The city's transportation authority is collaborating with major navigation apps, including AMAP, Baidu, and Tencent, to provide drivers with route guidance and real-time traffic congestion updates. Additionally, police officers will be stationed at potential congestion points to guide vehicles.

Drivers are strongly advised to carefully plan their routes based on guidance from navigation apps since some sections of the ground roads near the tunnel entrances and exits are still under construction.
