Shenzhen — the urban city

Writer: Joshua Fernandez  |  Editor: Lin Qiuying  |  From: Original  |  Updated: 2025-06-18

I often think about Shenzhen as one of the first stops for many foreigners visiting China. As their initial point of entry, it often shapes their very first impressions of the country. One thing that immediately captures the attention of visitors is the impressive scale and sheer number of tall buildings and cityscapes, which can feel like scenes straight out of a movie.

Having photographed this city for the past four years, I can confidently say there is no shortage of stunning urban landscapes within its urban sprawl. Each district boasts its own unique blend of historical and modern architecture, reflecting the defining characteristics of contemporary China. By documenting cityscapes at various stages of development, we can explore the evolving phases of urban planning and design. For photographers, this is not only an opportunity to appreciate the city's aesthetics but also to capture history as it unfolds.
