Nanzhong School
From: Shenzhen Daily
Built in 1931, Nanzhong School is one of the first protected historical buildings in Shenzhen and an immovable cultural relic in Pingshan. Its white walls, dark blue tiles, cornices, and carved pillars display a unique blend of Hakka and Southeast Asian architectural styles. The school was originally founded to educate children from two villages and was remarkable for also admitting married women, offering courses in Chinese, mathematics, geography, and physical education.

Renovated in 2018 by Pingshan District, the school now functions as a community library hosting cultural events and painting exhibitions. Viewed from above, the historic building set on a traffic circle resembles a tropical island in the urban sea.
