What defines Shenzhen: openness, optimism, and speed

Writer: Hugh Thomas  |  Editor: Rao Guoting  |  From: Original  |  Updated: 2025-07-15

When I think about Shenzhen, three words come to mind. First, “open.” The people here are genuinely open to new ideas and cultures, and that openness sparks creativity and enables people to seize opportunities as they appear.

Second, “optimism.” There’s a strong belief among Shenzhen residents that the future is bright and that their efforts will lead to a better life. This optimistic spirit energizes the city and its community.

Third, and perhaps most striking, is “speed.” Shenzhen’s pace of change is unparalleled in global history. The city offers opportunities like no other and moves faster than any other place I’ve witnessed. This combination of openness, optimism, and speed makes Shenzhen a magnet for talent and innovation.

As long as Shenzhen remains open, optimistic, and dynamic, I believe it will continue to attract people from all over — students, scholars, entrepreneurs — all eager to be part of this extraordinary journey of mutual growth between the city and CUHK-Shenzhen. It’s been my privilege to witness and contribute to this unfolding story.
