Shenzhen is preparing for its most intense rainstorm of the year, following heavy rainfall that began last Saturday.

The city has already seen widespread downpours, with some regions experiencing up to 189.4 mm of rain. The Dapeng District’s Xichong station recorded the highest total rainfall of 294.6 mm, while the Xiaomo Station in Shenshan Special Cooperation Zone recorded the heaviest hourly rainfall at 95.8 mm.

Today, strong south winds have intensified conditions in the Pearl River Estuary, triggering a line of thunderstorms. The rain in these areas is expected to follow a "training thunderstorm" pattern, where multiple storms will pass over the same areas, causing prolonged heavy rainfall.

A cloud map shows Dapeng New District yesterday morning, affected by the "training thunderstorm" pattern, resulting in intense and sustained rainfall.

The heaviest downpours are expected from tonight through Tuesday, Aug. 5, particularly between midnight and the early morning hours. Localized extreme rain is likely, with possible flooding in low-lying areas. The storm is forecast to ease Aug. 6, though scattered showers may continue.

This storm stands out for its long duration and high rainfall totals, making it the most severe of the year. The intensity of the storm, combined with the timing of heavy rains in the early morning, could disrupt commutes and daily life. Residents are urged to monitor forecasts and stay prepared.

Forecast overview:

Tonight to Aug. 5: Cloudy skies with heavy rain and the risk of extreme downpours. The heaviest rainfall is expected during the night and early morning hours.

Aug. 6: Rainfall will decrease, but thunderstorms may persist intermittently.

Safety tips:

Stay safe during rain: Given the unstable weather, residents should stay vigilant against strong rainfall and possible flooding. Pay attention to water levels in low-lying areas, underpasses, and tunnels. Avoid parking in flood-prone areas.

Be aware of geological risks: Continuous heavy rain has saturated the soil, heightening the risk of landslides, soil erosion, and other geological hazards. Avoid areas prone to flooding or landslides, including slopes and low-lying zones.

Monitor updates: Stay updated on the latest weather alerts through the Shenzhen Weather app, official social media channels, and public notifications like text messages and outdoor screens.

As the storm approaches, residents are advised to plan their travels carefully and follow official guidance.
