Dongmen Pedestrian Street

Chinese name: 东门步行街 Dōngmén Bùxíngjiē

A high-energy, high volume shopping strip, Dongmen attracts hordes of retail-hungry shoppers to its low-cost stores hawking youthful fashions, shoes, accessories and souvenirs.

Visiting the street is an assault on the senses, with electronic music blaring from doorways and shop assistants with noisy clackers adding to the cacophony.

A commercial area back in the days when Shenzhen was a small market town, the original Cantonese-style shophouses were demolished in the 1980s as part of a wholesale remodelling of newly established Luohu district. Siyue Academy is a surviving relic, although it was relocated to its current site from a few streets away in 1998.
