Locals and e-bikes

Writer: Joshua Fernandez  |  Editor: Yu Xiyao  |  From: Original  |  Updated: 2025-09-18

The most common e-bike riders in Shenzhen are couriers racing to deliver parcels and takeout. Beyond them, e-bikes are the go-to mode of transport for parents sending children to school and for residents running errands around their neighborhoods.

Cheap to buy and easy to park, they have become an indispensable part of daily life. As of the end of last year, 5.5 million e-bikes were registered in the city, which has a population of about 18 million.

Here are some photos I captured of e-bikes — sometimes with their owners, sometimes standing alone — that I found endearing.
