“It's incredibly important that we have lots of scholars and people from many different domains—not just technology, but philosophy and a whole range of backgrounds—thinking about the implications of AI now and into the future. We all need to consider its enormous effect,” said Davies.

“I teach students. When they began their studies three years ago, nobody knew what AI language models were. Now, everyone is using them. For young children today, they will never have lived a moment without AI. The impacts of this really need to be discussed, which is why events like this are so important,” he noted.

Davies also stressed the need for robust and rapid discussion about AI's purpose. "How we use AI and how we integrate it now might affect the future far into the future, as AI has already been integrated into our lives in both small and large ways,” said Davis.

The open research program “Technology for Good: Driving Social Impact” was jointly launched this April 7 by the Centre for Governance and Sustainability at the National University of Singapore Business School and Tencent. Since its launch, the program has received applications from 134 research fellows worldwide.
