Shenzhen has been ranked 27th on a list of the world’s top 100 education cities, according to a ranking released last week by the Institute of World Influential Education Center Studies at the University of International Business and Economics (UIBE).
China led Asia with 16 cities on the list.
Beijing and Shanghai placed third and ninth, respectively, both in the global top 10, while Hong Kong ranked 12th.
Other Chinese cities included were Guangzhou (37th), Nanjing (47th), Macao (48th), Wuhan (49th), Chengdu (53rd), Taipei (60th), Xi’an (65th), Chongqing (66th), Tianjin (71st), Hefei (84th), and Changsha (85th).
The U.S. topped the country rankings with 19 cities, followed by China (16), Germany (7), and the U.K., Switzerland, and Canada (4 each).
Seoul and Tokyo ranked 5th and 13th, respectively, reflecting how educational resources and urban development reinforce each other in major East Asian capitals.
By continent, Europe led with 39 cities, Asia had 29, North America 24, Oceania 4, and South America and Africa 2 each.
Professor Yuan Ke of UIBE, a member of the evaluation team, said the ranking was built on four primary indicators — educational development, contribution, support, and inclusivity.
The indicators were chosen according to people-centered principles, innovation and openness, international comparability, forward-looking value, and feasibility. They were refined through multiple rounds of team discussion and expert consultation. (China Daily)
