Experience the beat at percussion culture festival

This National Day holiday, domestic and world percussionists will gather for the 16th Shenzhen Percussion Culture Festival, one of China’s largest and most influential percussion events.

Free performances will feature drummer Rich Huang from China’s Taiwan, Japanese jazz drummer Izumi Koga, Venezuelan drummer Jair Mayorga, the An Zhishun Percussion Art Troupe, and crossover collaborations with jazz groups from across the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA).

Huang is also a songwriter and composer whose work spans pop, classical, jazz and traditional music. He has been promoting jazz drumming for more than four decades.

Koga, a Berklee College of Music graduate, has taught jazz drumming in China for nearly 20 years and is currently an instructor at Beijing Contemporary Music Academy.

Expect an exciting blend of tradition and modernity at three free shows featuring Huang, Koga, Mayorga and others.

Traditional Chinese percussion: 3-4:20 p.m., Oct. 4

GBA percussionists: 7-9 p.m., Oct. 4

World percussionists: 6:30-9 p.m., Oct. 5

Food discounts

Audience members for the three concerts can present their digital tickets to receive discounts at participating restaurants on Bagua 1st Road (八卦一路) from Oct. 3-6. A well-known food street for more than 30 years, the road offers a wide range of regional Chinese cuisines, including Chaoshan, Cantonese, Sichuan, Chongqing, Hubei and northeastern Chinese dishes.
